Chapter 6: Item Three

The meeting ran for forty minutes before anyone said the word lease.

I typed every line.

Quarterly billings were up. An associate's review was moved to Friday. The partner with the cough argued about parking.

Then the senior partner cleared his throat and turned to Braden.

"Item three. Mr. Lund."

Braden stood and buttoned his jacket. Lenora stood a half second behind him.

"Thank you, sir." He smiled at the room. "Everyone here knows the lease on floors six through nine ends on December thirty-first."

Nine partners nodded.

"The owner has been hard to reach. The building's management company is a wall. But Nora and I have been working a different angle."

"What angle?" Alexander asked.

Braden turned to him with a friendly face. "Through the owner's family. I can't say more yet, for the family's sake. But I expect to have terms by Christmas, and I expect them to be generous."

I kept my fingers moving.

Owner's family. He had written it into the minutes of his own meeting.

"Generous how?" the partner with the cough said.

"The current rate for five more years," Lenora said. Her voice was smooth and warm, and the partners leaned toward it. "We have a good relationship with the people involved."

"Do you have a name?" Alexander said.

"Not one I'm authorized to give."

"Then you have a relationship with someone whose name you can't give."
