Chapter 26: The Whole Time

Corrado was already dressed when I came down.

I showed him the photo anyway.

He looked at it for a long time.

"Alone," he said.

"Alone."

"Then I'll drive you to the fishing huts. Not to the gate. He won't see the car from the house."

I didn't argue.

He opened the safe behind the pantry door with the numbers off my hand.

He gave me the cracked phone.

We were on the Palermo road by six.

Past Termini, he took his phone out of his jacket and held it out to me with a number already on the screen.

"He gave it to me on Sunday," Corrado said. "Between the olives and the coffee."

Then I copied it into my own phone, one digit at a time.

At five past nine he stopped the car beside the fishing huts on the coast road.

Gaetano's spot.

The villa was white on the hill above us, and the dome caught the sun.

"Leave it open," I said.

Corrado knew I didn't mean the car door.

I made one call before I got out.

When it connected, I didn't say anything.

I put the phone in my jacket pocket, screen in.
