Chapter 29: The Council
"Then he'll speak first," I said. "And I'll answer."
"That's what a council is for, Signora Morreale."
The old Don hung up.
The chapter hall of Palermo cathedral is a long stone room behind the sacristy, with a painted ceiling and one table down the middle.
At ten the next morning every chair at that table was full.
The Sciarras sat on the right, uncles and cousins in dark suits.
On the left sat the smaller Families. Trapani. Agrigento. The Amatos of Catania, three men behind Corrado.
The Morreales had one chair.
My father sat in it, gray, in his Sunday suit.
My mother stood behind him with her hand on the back of it.
The old Don sat at the head of the table under a crucifix.
Gaetano sat at his left, his ribs strapped under his shirt and his cheek purple to the ear.
Graziella sat alone on a bench by the wall, a man on either side of her.
She was in black.
No red shoes today.
I sat at the foot of the table, facing the old Don down its whole length.
