Chapter 18: Forty Seconds
"Every night," I said. "Since when?"
"Since August, she told me," Ray said. "She's counting calves."
Sam already had his phone out.
"Do you have her number?"
Ray dug a folded receipt out of his jacket pocket.
A phone number was written on the back in carpenter's pencil.
"She gave it to me in case I saw a bull with a broken antler," he said. "I've been carrying it around for two days trying to decide if I'm a crazy old man."
Sam called her from the hallway outside my room.
I could hear his voice through the door, low and careful.
When he came back in, he sat on the edge of the chair.
"She's never looked at October tenth," he said.
"How can she not have looked?"
"Her software sorts the pictures. Anything with an elk goes in one folder. Anything without goes in another one, and she never opens it."
"A car isn't an elk," Ray said.
"No," Sam said. "A car isn't an elk."
They let me out of Harborview on Friday afternoon with a printed sheet that said REST in capital letters.
Without the boot my left foot felt light and strange.
