Chapter 25: Her Eyes

I held the card by its edges.

Ray took one look at it and went to the window.

He stood there with the curtain pulled back an inch, watching his own lane.

"He knows where I live," he said.

"Somebody does," Sam said.

"Same thing."

I didn't touch the scarf.

I knew those stitches. My mother knitted it for me the Christmas I turned twenty-five.

The last time I'd seen it, it was lying on the gravel in a black and white photograph, and he was laughing over it.

"Don't put it back in the box," Sam said. "Don't fold it. Leave it exactly like that."

He called the ranger from Ray's kitchen.

She lived twenty minutes from the Hoh, and she was on Ray's porch in forty.

She came in jeans and a fleece with her gray braid wet from the rain.

She didn't say hello either.

She pulled on gloves at the table and lifted the scarf into a clear bag.

The card went in a second bag.

She held that one up to the lamp and read it twice.

"You dropped this," she said.

"He picked it up at 6:41," I said. "You've seen him do it."

"I've seen a man pick up something pale on an infrared camera. His lawyer would call it a rag."

She set the bag down on Ray's tablecloth.

"Now he's written it down in his own pen. And mailed it to the woman he left."
