Chapter 5: The Bottle

I read the statement four times in the hospital bed.

Falsified.

Seven years at that company.

Every Ironwood bottle on every salon shelf in the country had my formula in it.

And they'd written "falsified" next to my name before breakfast.

"I didn't fake anything," I said.

"I know," Sam said.

"You don't know. You met me at one in the morning."

"I've read your reports forty times. Nobody fakes a pH log with the room temperature written in the margin."

He took his phone back.

"The bride has been on the phone with me since six. She wants to meet you."

"Why?"

"Because she thinks you're the only person in Seattle who believed her."

They let me out that afternoon with a black walking boot on my left leg and a pair of crutches.

Ray had already rented two rooms at a motel on Aurora.

"I'm not going back to Forks till you've got somewhere real to sleep," he said.

I didn't have the strength to argue.

On Sunday he drove me to Pioneer Square.

Sam's office was two rooms above a bakery.

The whole stairwell smelled like cardamom bread.

There was a desk buried in folders, a long table, and a window full of rain.

Three women were waiting at the table.

They all stood up when I came in on the crutches.

The bride was twenty-eight, with a soft round face.

She was wearing a silk scarf tied over her head.

The teacher was older, maybe forty, with reading glasses on a beaded chain.

The barista was the youngest. Twenty-three, with a nose ring and a beanie pulled low.

Nobody said anything for a second.

Then the bride came around the table and hugged me, crutches and all.

"You're the one," she said into my shoulder. "You're the one who tested it."

"You brought it to me."
