Chapter 8: The Meteor Field

I sat down.

I had said I would stand, and I sat down in the chair across from his desk with the notebook open on my knees.

Tobias stayed at the window.

"Read it," he said. "I can tell you the rest after."

The first pages were small things.

A girl in a freshman dorm, in a new city, writing about a roommate who ate her yogurt and a professor who mispronounced her name.

Then, three weeks in, the handwriting grew rounder and happier.

*Conor P. from the third floor asked me to sit with them at dinner. Marley, who is so pretty it hurts, said I had good hair. Colt took my picture for his camera.*

*They're calling me their little sister.*

I turned a page.

*Conor says I'm too quiet. He says he's going to help me get tougher, like a project. I said okay.*

*He says everybody in their group has to do the first challenge.*

My throat closed.

I knew those words.

I had heard Conor say them in that same warm voice, the October I was nineteen.

I kept reading.

*Saturday. They're taking me to watch the meteor shower. Conor packed blankets. Marley brought hot chocolate in a thermos.*

*I'm so happy I can't sleep.*

The next page had only two lines.

The ink was smeared across the first one, and her handwriting had changed completely.

*Woke up and they were gone.*

*I walked toward the lights.*

I put my hand over my mouth.

"The road," I said.

"A county road. It had no shoulder and no streetlights," Tobias said from the window. "She walked two miles in the dark in sandals, because she thought if she found a house she could call someone. A truck came over the hill. The driver never saw her."

"Is she alive?"

"She is."

I breathed out.

"She was in the hospital for four months. They put a plate in her hip. She walks with a cane, and she never went back to school."
