Chapter 8: Under the Axle
We left for the Families' table at nine, in three cars.
I had not slept. I sat in the back of the second car with Ruggiero beside me, and I watched the back of his driver's head.
His number had not changed.
Thirty-eight.
The man had whistled while he drove us down the river road.
"You're quiet this morning, Mrs. Falsetti," he said, smiling at me in the mirror.
"I'm thinking about my sister."
"She's in good hands."
"Yes," I said. "She is."
Ruggiero's hand lay on the seat between us. The knuckles were wrapped in white tape.
He had told his men nothing. He had only said that we would take the cars through the yard gate slowly, and that he wanted every one of them checked at the gate.
"Checked by whom?" the driver had asked.
"By the Commission's people. It's their ground."
"That's insulting, boss. To them and to us."
"Humor me," Ruggiero had said.
The driver had shrugged and laughed.
His number had not changed then.
It changed now.
As we turned into the lane that led to the stockyard gate, the number over his head began to shake.
It was a small movement, a flutter, and it grew.
I had never seen one do that.
I gripped Ruggiero's sleeve.
"Now," I whispered. "It's now."
He did not ask me anything.
He leaned forward and said, in a mild voice, "Pull over here."
"Boss, we're almost..."
"Pull over."
The driver glanced in the mirror. For the first time, his smile stopped.
He pulled over.
The yard gate stood a hundred feet ahead. A dozen men from other Families stood beyond it, in dark coats, waiting for the sit-down. I knew two of them by sight. One was the Commission's own doorman, who was nearly eighty.
