Chapter 13: The Pen
I looked at the pen, and I did not take it.
"No," I said.
Harriet's fingers stayed on my sleeve.
"You do not understand your position."
"I understand it fine. The license was issued Thursday, and I wasn't in the courthouse on Thursday."
The judge shifted his weight.
"Nobody asked me to sign for it," I said to him. "Nobody asked me anything. Whose signature did the clerk see?"
The young woman with the clipboard looked at her shoes.
The man in the collar closed his Bible.
"Harriet," the judge said, quietly, "you told me the girl had agreed."
"She has agreed. She is being theatrical."
"I'm being exact," I said. "Out there are forty people and the editor of the Courier, and in ten minutes I'm going to walk to the middle of that ballroom and tell them about the letter, the loan and the cedar chest."
Harriet's hand came off my sleeve.
It was the first time in two lives I had seen her not know what to do with it.
"You would not dare."
"I already did, at the club. You were there."
I turned and walked out.
Nobody stopped me.
The ballroom was still full of music, and the first face I saw was Lena's, white against her green dress.
The second was Tobin's.
He was standing by the double doors with his hands loose at his sides, watching the hallway.
I crossed the floor, and the mayor stopped talking, and a woman with a champagne flute stepped aside.
I took Tobin's hand in front of all of them.
"Take me out of here," I said.
"Now?"
"Now."
He didn't ask one question.
He put his rented jacket over my shoulders, and he walked me past Brendan, who had a hand half raised, and past Harriet's gray shape in the library doorway, and down the front steps into the dark.
His car was a ten-year-old Honda with a cracked dashboard.
