Chapter 7: Red Light
I got into the car.
I didn't do it because I trusted him.
I did it because the first bus left in forty minutes, and I wanted him where I could watch his hands.
Lena slid over to make room beside her, and I sat behind Brendan with my backpack on my knees.
"I'm glad you came," he said, and pulled out of the lot.
I said nothing.
Lena leaned forward between the seats.
"He wanted to apologize last night, Ciara, but you'd already gone. He couldn't sleep. He's been calling me since midnight."
"Lena," Brendan said mildly.
"Well, you have."
"What did you want to apologize for?" I asked.
"For letting it look like I'd hidden something." He kept his eyes on the road. "The letter did come to the Sutcliffe building. I should have walked it to your door the same day. I thought I'd tell you on the tenth, when you were happy, and it would be a surprise."
"You opened it."
"A clerk did."
"And you waited two weeks."
"I was afraid of losing you."
It was a good line.
It was almost good enough that I would have believed it at twenty.
Lena put her hand over mine on the seat.
"He's trying, Ciara. Hear him out."
"I'm listening."
"My grandmother has agreed to something," Brendan said. "You may go to Westmere in the fall."
I felt Lena's hand tighten.
"And the wedding?" I asked.
"The tenth. We'd marry in June, and in August you'd drive up on Mondays, if you like. I'd get you an apartment. You'd come home on weekends."
