Chapter 10: Either Way, I Win
By noon the video had four million views.
I read the comments in the car while Lucian drove.
She picked the rival on purpose.
She was never going to marry him.
Poor Tristan.
Lucian did not say anything.
He drove with both hands on the wheel and his jaw set, and I felt his anger rising through the bond.
"Don't," I said. "Don't kill anyone before lunch."
"I wasn't going to."
"You were thinking about it."
"I was thinking about Tristan's thumbs."
I held out my hand.
"The camera feed," I said. "From the lounge. The whole night, with sound."
He glanced at me.
"You'd use it?"
"They cut one minute out of it, Lucian. I want to show the other fifty."
He pulled over, took a drive from his jacket pocket, and put it in my palm.
"There's one clip I think you'll like," he said. "Before the game, about three in the afternoon. Tristan came to the lounge early."
I plugged the drive into my phone and watched.
On the little screen, the empty lounge, the long glass table, and Tristan in a grey suit.
A man in a hotel uniform stood in front of him, holding a stack of keys.
"This one gets Sayer," Tristan said, tapping a key. "That's mine. And this one says my name, and it goes in the last place on the table. She draws last. She always does."
"Yes, sir."
"If she draws it, I get a little credit with her, and if she doesn't, I get Bridget."
He laughed.
"Either way, I win."
I stopped the clip.
I sat in the car for a minute and felt very calm.
