Chapter 15: The East Wing

Margo's POV

Bridget stood on the laundry stair in her grey dress, holding a candle stub.

"You came," she whispered.

"You didn't think I would?" I said.

"I thought you'd send someone else."

Lucian looked at her once, and then looked away.

"Show us," he said.

She led us up four flights of narrow servants' stairs. Nobody spoke, and the house made no sound.

At the top there was a short corridor and a tall door with a heavy bolt on the outside.

"The library is behind that wall," Bridget said. "I can't go further. He counts the maids at three."

"Go," I said.

She went, with her candle shaking.

Lucian put both hands on the bolt.

It was iron, as thick as my wrist, and he pulled it out of the wood in one movement.

The door swung in.

The room was small and had no windows, and it smelled of antiseptic and old blood.

A narrow cot stood against the far wall with a tube coiled beside it. Someone lay on the cot under a grey blanket.

The walls were covered in pencil.

Row after row of tally marks, in groups of five, from the floor to as high as an arm could reach. Between the rows she had written dates, and the date numbers all had the same crossed sevens.

Lucian made a noise I had never heard from any person.

He crossed the room in two steps and went down on his knees by the cot.

"Rosa."

The woman under the blanket did not move.

She was thin, and her black hair was cut ragged at her shoulders, and her skin was grey around the mouth. Her arms lay outside the blanket, bruised from wrist to elbow in a hundred and fifty-six small purple circles.

I stopped in the doorway because my knees would not go on.
