Chapter 16: Intruders
The door burst inward in under a minute.
Six Hierarchy guards in grey coats came through it with drawn blades, and Tristan walked in behind them.
"There," he said, and pointed. "Ward has broken into my father's private rooms and put him on the floor."
Lucian got off Cornelius's chest slowly and stood with his hands open.
Cornelius sat up, and wiped the blood from his lip with a handkerchief.
He looked like an old man who had been badly wronged.
"Captain," he said. "Thank you. They came in by the laundry stair, with a stolen key."
"I have a key," I said. "A maid gave it to me."
"Which maid?" said Tristan.
I shut my mouth. Bridget was somewhere in the house with her wrist in a bandage, and I would not give her to him.
The captain of the guard was a thick, tired woman with a grey braid. She looked around the little room, at the cot and the tube and the tallies on the walls.
Then she looked at the thin woman on the cot.
"Who is that?" she asked.
"A servant," said Cornelius at once. "A very sad case."
"She was a kitchen girl in my house, and she lost her mind in grief."
"Now she believes she is a person who died. I keep her here for her own safety."
"Her own safety," Lucian said.
"She is unwell, Mr. Ward. She says many things."
"She has been drawn a hundred and fifty-six times."
"Donor program," said Tristan.
"With a tally on the wall?" I said.
"A madwoman's tally."
The captain glanced at me, and at the room, and back at the cot. She did not look convinced, but she did not look sure.
