Chapter 8: The Garden Room

For a second, the only sound in the boardroom was the ceiling fan.

Then Bryce laughed.

"Your wife," he said.

"My wife," Henry said.

Bryce looked at me.

"Amanda. What is this?"

I put my left hand flat on the teak table.

The old gold band caught the light from the open doors.

Kylie made a small sound.

"We were married on Friday," Henry said. "At City Hall in Denver. Three twenty in the afternoon."

"In the appointment she made for the two of you. I understand you were busy."

Bryce's chair scraped back.

He stood up.

"Friday morning you were engaged to me," he said to me. "Friday morning you were wearing my ring."

"Friday morning you told me a few days wouldn't kill anybody."

"So, what? You just picked up a billionaire on the way to City Hall?" His voice was climbing. "How long has this been going on? A month? A year? You've been sleeping with a client behind my back?"

"I met him on Friday at three o'clock," I said. "On a bench."

"Oh, come on."

"That's the truth."

"You expect me to believe you married a stranger in an afternoon?"

"You flew a stranger to my honeymoon."

Kylie slammed the clicker down on the table.

"I'm not a stranger," she said, and her baby voice was gone. It came out flat and hard. "Oh my God. She trapped him. Do you not see it? She's been planning this. She stole our pitch and gave it to him."

"Our pitch," I said.

"Yes, ours."

"Then why Tuesday, Kylie?"

She opened her mouth and nothing came out.

Henry stood up.

"Here's my decision," he said, "so nobody has to wait for it."

Bryce turned to him, and I watched him switch faces, fast, the angry one off and the charming one on.

"Mr. Ashcroft, please. This is a personal matter that has nothing to do with our business."
