Chapter 6: The Tuxedo

Rupert was sitting in the third chair from the door with his hands between his knees.

He wore the charcoal tuxedo we had picked out together in August, and a white rosebud was pinned to the lapel.

Two women with big bellies and a man holding a toddler were staring at him.

He stood up when he saw me.

"How did you find me?" I said.

"Your calendar. You left the shared one on."

He tried to smile.

"Claire, it's ten in the morning. The guests start arriving at one."

"Rupert, there is no wedding."

"There can be. I brought it."

He took a thick envelope out of his inside pocket and a pen out of the other.

It was the prenup, the one with my name next to the word caregiver.

He had carried it into a women's clinic on his wedding day.

He had pinned on a rosebud and brought a pen, and he still had not asked me how I was.

"Sign it, and we drive to the venue together. Nobody has to know about any of this."

"Forty people know. I told them."

"They'll forget."

"I'm keeping the baby," I said.

He stopped with the pen in the air.

For a second his whole face changed, and I saw something that might have been relief.
