Chapter 22: Stay

Selah's POV

I ran through the rain in my gala dress, and I hit the driver's window with my open hand.

Kip rolled it down.

His face was wet, and I couldn't tell how much of it was rain.

"Don't," I said. "Don't put that truck in gear."

"Selah, you should be inside."

"Get out."

"I have a job."

"You have a job here, and it's me." My hair was in my eyes. "I'm begging you, Kip. Please. Stay."

He went very still.

It was what he had said to me at the party, in front of forty people, with Monty in the door.

I watched him hear it.

"You said it to me once," I said. "I walked out and I let you stand there. I'm sorry. I'm standing here now."

"You don't have to do this because you owe me."

"I don't owe you." I wiped my eyes with the heel of my hand. "I'm furious with you. I'm going to be furious about the letters for a year. I'm staying anyway."

"My aunt said..."

"I know what she said. She said I love a voice." I took hold of the door. "Get out of the truck and let me tell you what I love."

He cut the engine.

He climbed down into the rain and stood in front of me.

He was bigger than I remembered, and he looked scared.

"The third stair in my building," I said. "It was loose for a year. The landlord said he'd get to it. One Sunday I came home and it was fixed, and you said you'd done nothing."

"I did nothing."

"You took the day off. You've been fixing it in secret for six years. The mailbox. The window sash. The step stool at the library."

He opened his mouth.
