Chapter 15: Pond Day

Pond Day began with firecrackers and a banner that said TANG GROUP WELCOMES QINGXI.

The communal pond lay across the road from the fish pond, wide and brown and ringed with bunting.

Thirty households had brought stools and rods and thermoses.

Children ran along the bank, and the aunties had set up a trestle table with tea eggs.

"Out of range, Host," said the Pond System, very small. "I wish you luck. I will be here, doing nothing."

"That's all I ask," Lu Qing murmured.

Wenjie stood on a box with a microphone.

He wore a Tang Group windbreaker and a very large smile.

"Rules! Two hours. Heaviest single fish landed on a hook. Weighed live, returned to the water."

"And the stakes?" called Aunt Fen.

"Everyone knows the stakes, Auntie." He spread his hands.

"If the pond's entry wins, we withdraw and pay for the roof. If not, the village votes."

Applause rolled round the bank.

Qian Lixin sat at a table by the scales in a clean shirt, as the judge, and did not look up.

The fish seller was at peg one, by the reeds, with a large green keepnet in the water at his feet.

Lu Qing was at peg seven.

Meng Yuhe sat beside him on a folding stool, in Grandpa's blue shirt, with his rod across his knees.

"I have never been so nervous," said Lu Qing.

"I know."
