Chapter 18: Esther's Kitchen
I went out to the driveway in my socks, and Brett rolled down his window.
He didn't say hello.
"I saw her come over," he said. "I figured she was screaming at you, so I stayed."
"She wasn't screaming."
"That's worse."
"Yes."
He had both hands on the steering wheel and the car key on his knee.
His face looked younger than it had at the party.
"Can I say something?" he said. "I wrote it down, but I'll mess it up."
"Go ahead."
"When I was twelve, you threw up all night, and your lips swelled. I came down for a glass of milk and saw you in the bathroom. Mom drove you to the ER and told me it was a stomach bug."
"It was a peanut."
"I know that now." He swallowed. "I never asked what you ate. I laughed at you at the bus stop. I did your boots thing because Kayla did, and I liked being on the side that wasn't the boots."
He held the key out through the window.
"This is a thirty-one thousand dollar piece of metal that I didn't earn. I'll get a job. I'll pay it back with interest."
"With what?"
"With whatever. I'll work at the lumber yard with Dad."
"You've got a hockey season."
"Then after."
I looked at the key.
It had a plain tag, with no initials.
"I'll take it," I said. "I'm not saying it's okay."
"I know it's not."
"But you can come in. Esther made a roast."
His eyes went wide.
"Seriously?"
"She made too much. She says she always makes too much, and then I always eat all of it."
