Chapter 9: Brett in the Parking Lot

Brett was waiting beside Esther's car on Friday afternoon.

He had his hockey jacket on and his hands jammed in the pockets.

He had not slept either.

I stopped ten feet away, with my backpack on one shoulder.

"I'm not here to yell," he said. "Kayla's at home screaming at her phone. I took the bus."

"You took a bus."

"I wanted to talk to you without anybody listening."

Esther was across the lot talking to the counselor.

She glanced over, and I shook my head slightly, and she stayed where she was.

"Okay," I said. "Talk."

He scuffed a boot against the curb.

"Mom says you're lying. She says the state sends money for foster kids, and it's tiny, and we've been covering the rest out of Dad's overtime. She said you were making a federal case out of nothing."

"Do you believe her?"

"I did until last night."

He looked up.

"The whole gym looked at her. Not at you, at her. And I thought, nobody does that over nothing."

I took out my phone, opened the photos, and found the page I wanted.

"This is from the lawyer who runs my mother's trust. It's a statement your mother signed. Read the line at the bottom."

He took the phone in both hands and read it.

His lips moved on the last words.

The ward's needs have been fully met.
