Chapter 11: Dawn in the Hallway

I pulled on my jeans and opened the front door.

Shane stood on the landing in the gray light with his arms wrapped around himself.

He looked at my bare chest and past me at the hall, where Jo stood in a robe with her arms crossed.

He did not look surprised.

"Okay," he said. "Good."

"What time is it?" I asked.

"Five. I didn't sleep." His voice was hoarse. "She texted me. She says she gave you a ticket and told you to ask me how it looks written down."

"She said that to me yesterday."

"Then she's going to do it. She's going to put it on paper in front of someone, and it'll be in my handwriting." He swallowed. "I want you to hear it from me first. All of it. Right now, before I lose my nerve."

Jo came and stood beside me.

She did not touch me.

"Come in," she said.

"No. Out here." Shane looked at the floor. "I can't say it inside. Can we sit on the stairs?"

We sat on the wet wooden steps, Shane on the bottom one, me two above him, Jo in the doorway at the top.

The sky was getting pale over the rooftops.

I waited.

It took him a long time.

"You were in Ohio," he said. "I left the wake early because Megan texted me she was already drunk at her own party, and that she wanted me there. I went because I thought, she's your girlfriend, she's turning eighteen, somebody ought to keep an eye on her."

I nodded.

"She had a bottle of something her brother left. By the time I got there she had half of it in her. She made me do shots. I'd had three drinks, maybe four. I don't drink much. I'm big and I get slow."

He stopped.

"She put her hand on my chest," he said. "She said, he's not here, is he? And she kind of laughed."
