Chapter 16: Devin's POV: Edit History

Devin's POV

On Sunday morning Shane opened the Rounds file on Jo's laptop for the first time in his life without being told to.

"She made me an editor in sophomore year," he said. "So I could add my own entries. I hated opening it, so I never looked at anything but my line."

"Can you see who typed what?"

"There's a clock icon in the corner. I think it keeps every change."

He clicked it.

A list came down the right side of the screen, a column of dates and times and small colored names.

Megan's was pink, and Shane's was blue.

Jo leaned over his shoulder with her coffee, back from her shift, still in her coat.

I sat on the arm of the couch and tried not to breathe on anything.

"Scroll to the bottom," I said.

It took a long time.

The history went back four years.

At the very bottom was one pink entry, made at 7:41 in the morning on the fourteenth of September.

Under it was the line I had already seen once in a photograph: Round 1 (real). P. R stays quiet. Forever.

Nobody spoke.

"That's the day after the party," Jo said.

"The morning after, before he left her room," I said.

Shane sat very still.

"She typed that while I was sitting at her desk writing the note," he said. "I could hear her keys."

"And she told you to date it the twelfth."

"Yes."

"The file calls the first round the fourteenth. Her own file, in her own color." I let myself breathe. "The note says he wrote it before. The clock says she made it up after."

Jo set her mug down on the shelf.

"Is that enough?" she asked.

"Not alone. But it makes the note a lie she can't explain, and with the guest book it's a lie with a date."
