Chapter 19: Hot Water

The roommate's footsteps went down the stairs, and Jo locked the door behind her and stood with her forehead against it.

"Six to six," she said to the wood. "If somebody tells Megan what shift I work, that's what she gets."

"You don't walk to the hospital alone."

"I walk into a building with security and forty people." She breathed out. "But fine. Shane or you, both ways, starting tomorrow."

"It's after midnight," she said.

"I know."

"Rule one."

"I wasn't going to say her name."

"Good." She turned around. "Shane, go to sleep."

"I'm already asleep," said Shane, from the couch, with his headphones on and his eyes shut.

He had barely slept in days, and he wasn't pretending well, and we both let him.

Jo took my wrist and led me down the hall.

She didn't stop at her bedroom.

She opened the bathroom door and pulled me in, and locked it, and turned the shower on all the way until the pipes shook.

"The water's loud," she said.

"It's very loud."

"So you can be as loud as you want."

She pushed me back against the sink and kissed me.

It was not like the first time.

The first time had been hunger, and this was something with a grievance in it.

She bit my lip, hard, and I heard myself groan.

"I'm still angry," she said against my mouth.

"I know."

"Come here anyway."

She pulled my shirt over my head.

I got her sweatshirt off, and her T-shirt, and her jeans, and she kicked out of everything with her eyes on me.

Steam was starting to curl up from behind the curtain.

I unhooked her bra, and her breasts came free into my hands, heavy and warm.

I put my mouth on one, and she dragged in a breath and held on to the back of my head.

"Devin."

"Yeah."

"Faster."

"No."

She laughed, startled.

"I want to take my time with you," I said. "You've been on your feet for twelve hours and angry at me for two days. I'm going to take my time."

"That's very polite."

"It's not polite."

I sucked her nipple until her knees went, and she swore, and she pulled me toward the shower by the waistband.
