Chapter 14: Thirty Percent

Elias's POV

She had gone to Bea's, and I stood in my own kitchen until it got light.

I did not go after her.

She had asked me for the truth, and I had given it to her ten days too late.

Fourteen months ago she had walked out of my building for Trevor Langston, one week after I decided to tell her everything.

I had said nothing then, and I had said nothing at the altar, and last night I had finally told her and lost her anyway.

The terms said a year.

She had said yes for the revenge, and I had known it.

When the year ended, she would go.

I could not give her that year back.

I could give her what her father left her, and what I owned, and I could do it where Desmond Langston could watch.

At six in the morning I called my lawyer.

At seven I walked into the Langston and Company boardroom without knocking.

Twelve people sat around the long table, and Desmond sat at the head of it with a cup of coffee.

His eyes went to my lawyer, and then to the briefcase, and then to me.

"This is a private board meeting, Elias."

"I know."

"You have no seat."

"I have thirty percent," I said.

Nobody at the table spoke.

My lawyer set four folders in front of the oldest director.

"Four holding companies," I said. "I have been buying your stock through them for nine years, a few shares at a time, from every widow and retired engineer who would sell."

"Sixty million dollars was for the trust. This was the rest."

Desmond put his cup down very slowly.

"You have owned a third of my company, and you let me think you wanted my son's fiancée."

"I wanted your son's fiancée," I said. "That is a separate matter."
