Chapter 20: Before Light

Donal's POV

I left the bed at three on Sunday morning, and I left her asleep.

She had screamed herself hoarse at the cemetery gate, and cried in the car, and eaten nothing at the house.

At midnight she had fallen into the pillow with her hair still pinned up from the funeral, and she did not stir when I lifted her arm off my chest.

I dressed in the dark, and I did not take the driver.

The grave was a raw rectangle of earth under the oak, with the lilies thrown across it.

I stood at the foot of it for a long time with my hat in my hand.

"I owe you the numbers," I said.

The wind moved the leaves.

"You read them to me every Friday for six years, and I never once said they were good. I said, go on. That was what I gave you."

"I put a price on you. I told my men you were a thief. I wanted to drown you for a thing you never did, and she heard me say it."

I looked at the earth.

"You asked me to sit in the first pew because you had no family. I should have understood what that meant.

"I'll sit in it every year. I'll bring her, and anyone who comes after, and they will know your name."

I put a hand flat on the cold mound.

"I'm going to marry her, Cormac. Not yet. I'll ask when she's ready and not before. But I'm telling you first.

"I wanted you to hear it from me."

Then I went to the church.
