Chapter 18: Lunch With Mother

Brynn's POV

My mother had already ordered for both of us.

The glass room was nearly empty at one o'clock on a Thursday.

She had taken the table by the window, with white roses and two glasses of water, and she stood up and kissed my cheek.

I let her.

"No phones," she said, and she smiled. "Humor me, baby. It's one hour."

I put my phone in my bag and hung the bag on the back of my chair.

Neither of us touched the bread.

"I want to say something first," I said.

"Of course."

"You can resign tomorrow before the owners walk in. Say you're tired. Keep the house, keep your allowance, keep your name on the hospital wing. I won't sue you, and I won't play the forty hours."

"And if I don't?"

"Then I play them."

She looked at me for a long moment, and her eyes were warm and wet.

"You really would," she said.

"Yes."

"Your father used to look at me like that when he'd made up his mind about a hotel." She unfolded her napkin. "I always lost those arguments, you know. Thirty-one years of them."

"Mom."

"Let me say it, since I'm the one who's going to be punished for it." She laid the napkin across her lap. "At the twentieth anniversary dinner, your father stood up and thanked all six hundred of our staff by their department. When he got to me, he said, 'And my wife, who arranges the flowers.'"

I waited.

"I had built the staff scholarship. I'd written the hiring plan for four hotels." She almost laughed. "People clapped. I smiled like a person who arranges flowers."
