Chapter 19: Hired Man

Brice was standing at the loft window when I came up the steel stairs, and he turned around before I reached the top.

He had been waiting for me, and it showed in his shoulders.

"You sent it," I said.

"I sent it."

"She told you to leave, and you texted me instead."

"I thought about leaving for about four minutes." His voice was rough. "I'm not proud of the four minutes."

I shut the door and turned the lock.

I hung my father's jacket on the hook, where it had hung every night that week.

"Tomorrow she says it in front of six hundred people," I said. "Hired man."

"Yes."

"So tonight, Kincade, I want to know what the hired man does."

He didn't answer.

I walked across the floor, and I put my back against the brick wall beside the kitchen, and I looked at him.

"Tomorrow isn't here yet," I said. "You taught me that one."

His eyes went dark.

He crossed the floor in three strides and caught my wrists and pinned them over my head against the brick.

"Tell me to stop," he said.

"No."

"Brynn."

"Don't you dare."

His mouth came down on mine.

It wasn't slow, and it wasn't careful, and it wasn't anything like Sunday.

He kissed me.

He let go of my wrists only to drag the black dress up my thighs, and I heard the seam give.

"I liked that dress," I said against his teeth.

"I'll buy you ten."

He lifted me off the floor, and my back hit the brick, and I wrapped my legs around his hips.

I felt how hard he was through his jeans.

He ground against me once, slow, and I cried out into his mouth.

"There," he said. "That's what I've wanted to hear since you were twenty-two."

"Then do something about it."
