Chapter 15: The Aisle
Mina's eyes found mine in the mirror.
She didn't blink.
My mother was waiting, still smiling, her hand on Mina's wrist.
"I remember the party," I said.
"Such a terrible day." My mother shook her head. "And then so silly. Under the seat."
She kissed Mina's cheek and went out to scold the photographer.
Mina turned the watch on her wrist so the face sat straight.
"Thank you," she said, without looking at me.
I didn't know if she meant it.
I left before I found out.
At four o'clock a hundred and fifty people sat down in Eli's straight rows by the water.
The guest book table was at the top of the aisle, under a white arch of roses.
That was my job.
I stood behind it in a sage green dress with the silver pen and smiled at every guest who signed.
Most of them signed without looking at me.
A few of them looked at me too long.
One of them was holding her phone so the woman beside her could see.
