Chapter 14: Bounty

The hunters came at dusk two days later.

There were fourteen of them, in a mix of hunting jackets and county vests, and none of them wore Ironworks black.

They came down Peckham Street with shotguns and stopped at the yard gate.

Their leader was a heavy man with a gray mark and a hatchet on his belt.

"We're here for the porter's hand," he said. "Just the hand. Nobody else needs to get hurt."

Forty people in the yard went quiet.

The kids were inside the rectory with Lou and the old man with the cane.

I walked out to the gate.

"It's attached," I said. "I'm using it."

"Week of rations." The leader shrugged. "I've got three kids at home on the wall's soup. I'm not proud of it."

"I'm not either," I said. "You want to try for it, you've got to come through the gate."

He looked at the gate.

It was the rectory's old iron gate.

That morning I'd lifted it off its hinges and set it back upside down, so it opened only from our side.

He put his hand on it and pushed, and it didn't move.
