Chapter 19: Leg Press
On Tuesday I skipped the bench.
I walked past it, past the rack and the dumbbells, to the machine in the corner by the mirrored wall.
It was a plate-loaded leg press, a big black frame with a padded seat that tilted back and a steel sled that rode on rails.
Eight forty-five-pound plates sat in a stack beside it.
Rudy was behind me with the keys in his hand, one bank of lights on, the way he had left them for a hundred mornings.
"Ms. Ruelas," he said. "Legs are Thursday."
"Pull the safety pins on that thing," I said. "Lock it at the top."
He frowned and did it.
He slid the steel pins through the rails and the sled stopped, high and locked, and the plates stood stacked over the seat.
I walked around to the front of the seat.
"Shorts off," I said.
He undid them and stepped out.
I took off my own, and my sports bra, and folded them on the stack of plates.
The gym was cold at that hour, and the vinyl pad was colder.
I lay back on it, with my head on the headrest and my hips at the very front edge of the seat.
I put my feet up on his shoulders.
He was standing between the seat and the frame, and the tilt of the seat brought me exactly to his height.
My knees folded back toward my chest.
I looked up the length of my own body at him, naked and enormous in the low light, with his hands loose at his sides.
"Hold the rails," I said.
He reached out and took the steel bars on either side of my hips.
