Chapter 20: Mile Eight

The glass door opened at 6:41, and the owner walked in with a cardboard box under one arm and a coffee in her hand.

Rudy was in his shorts.

I was in my shirt and nothing else, sitting on the edge of the leg press with my bare feet swinging.

The owner stopped on the mat inside the door.

She looked at the leg press, and the stack of plates, and the pins pulled out of the rails.

She looked at my legs.

"Good morning," she said.

"Good morning," said Rudy.

"The insurance carrier closed the file Friday," the owner said. "I came in early to tell you, and to bring this."

She set the box on the front desk and lifted out a folded vinyl banner.

She shook it open.

It was bright blue, four feet wide, and printed in white letters.

SONORAN STRENGTH. TEMPE TOWN LAKE 10K. GO MARISOL.

"I had it made Thursday," she said. "The class is bringing it to the course. It goes on the last bridge. You don't have to look at it."

I couldn't speak.

"Put your pants on, Ms. Ruelas," said the owner. "It's a Tuesday."

She picked up her coffee and went into her office and shut the door.

I sat with my hand over my mouth.

Rudy was laughing so hard that he had to lean on the leg press, with the plates swaying behind him.

On Saturday we ran the last long run, nine miles, on the canal.
