Chapter 24: The Count
I woke on Mother's Day at seven with the blinds open and the mesquite throwing leaf shadows across the ceiling.
There was an arm over my waist.
There was a man breathing against the back of my neck, slow and warm, his knees tucked behind mine.
I lay there and listened to it.
I had not closed the blinds in three weeks, because I wanted to see the tree when I woke.
On the nightstand my phone buzzed.
It was a photo from his mother, which he had forwarded to me at midnight.
It showed a tray of tamales on a counter with a plastic cloth under it.
Under the picture, in capitals, she had written: ELEVEN O'CLOCK. BRING HER.
I turned the phone face down.
"She's already counting," Rudy murmured into my hair.
"You're awake."
"For a while," he said.
"Doing what?"
"Looking at your shoulder," he said.
I rolled onto my back to look at him.
His eyes were barely open, soft with sleep, and his buzzed hair had a crease on one side from my pillow.
He had a mark on his neck that was mine.
I put my thumb on it.
"Good morning, Ms. Ruelas," he said.
"I told you not to call me that on a Sunday."
"What do I call you?"
"You know what," I said.
"Marisol."
I kissed him.
It was slow and morning-soft, with his hand coming up to the side of my face and the covers sliding down off my shoulder.
I did not think of a single order.
I pulled back and lay on my side, away from him, and drew his arm around my waist.
"Like this," I said.
He fitted himself against my back.
I felt all of him, warm and hard along the length of my spine.
His chest was against my shoulder blades and his mouth at the nape of my neck.
