Chapter 24: Sunday Table

The doctor had a folder, and Brynn and I sat side by side in front of his desk holding hands.

"Your creatinine ticked up last month," he said. "That's what the coordinator saw. I wanted to look at you both before I said anything."

"Is it rejection?" Brynn whispered.

"It's a skipped dose." He looked at her over his glasses. "Two, I think. In the week of the housewarming."

Brynn put her free hand over her mouth.

"I didn't mean to. I was so scared and so happy, and I just forgot."

"You're allowed to be both," the doctor said, gently. "But set an alarm. Your numbers are the best they've been since November, and that kidney is working beautifully."

"It is hers," Brynn said. "I mean, it's mine. It's ours."

"It's yours," I said, and she started laughing and crying at once.

On Sunday Hattie's dining room had a leaf in the table, and the leaf had a leaf.

Thirty people sat down, and the editors and the accountants brought their own chairs.

The guard who could cook had made gumbo in a pot the size of a drum.

Ansel carved two roast chickens at the sideboard with the knife from my own kitchen.

Hattie directed him with a wooden spoon.

"Slower."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Against the grain, not with it. Honestly. Three years of letters and no one told him how to carve."
