Chapter 6: The Bridal Client

Bianca's office was on the second floor of a brick building above a bakery.

Her name was on the glass in gold paint. Larkin Events, Weddings Done Right.

I had helped her pick the font.

On Monday morning I carried in two dozen white roses from my shop, because a florist can walk into any office with flowers and nobody asks why.

The receptionist looked up and smiled. "Bianca's with a client. She's almost done."

"I'll wait."

The conference room door was glass. I could see Bianca at the head of the table in a cream suit, with a bride, the bride's mother and two bridesmaids.

A contract lay open in front of the bride. Bianca was holding out a pen.

I pushed the door open with my shoulder.

"Sorry to interrupt," I said. "I just wanted to bring these to the lucky bride."

Bianca's face went white.

"Valeria, this isn't the time."

"It's never the time with you, is it?"

I put the roses on the table in front of the bride, a small woman of about twenty-five with a ring that was still new.

"Congratulations," I said. "Bianca's going to plan everything for you. Every detail. She'll tell you she's the only one you can trust."

"Valeria," Bianca said.

"She planned my wedding on Saturday. She picked the dress, the church, the car and the music."

I smiled at the bride.

"Then she slept with my husband the night before the wedding. It's on a recording. Ten minutes after the priest finished, he told me so himself."

The bride's mother put down her coffee.

"I don't know what she's talking about," Bianca said. Her voice cracked on the last word. "She's had a breakdown. She's not well."
