Chapter 23: Married Before Opening

We were married on a Sunday in September, in the bakery, before opening.

Bree had pushed the tables against the wall and hung string lights from the pastry case.

The shop smelled of butter and sugar and the first bread of the morning.

I had asked for exactly that.

I stood in the back room in a plain ivory dress, with my hair tied back, and flour on one sleeve on purpose.

"You look like a verdict," said Bree.

"You said that last time."

"It was true last time." She straightened my collar and sniffed. "Don't make me cry. I have a rolling pin."

Odette was in the doorway.

She wore a navy suit and her pearls, and she held the green velvet box in both hands.

"I would like to give you something," she said.

"You gave me the ring."

"That was his. This is mine."

She opened the box.

Inside, on the worn velvet, lay a thin plain gold band.

"It was Quinton's mother's wedding ring," she said. "I kept it in the safe for thirty years, except for one afternoon I regret. I thought it was waiting for him, but I think now it was waiting for you."

I could not speak.

She slid it onto my right hand over the knuckle, and she kissed my cheek.

"Don't cry," she said. "Bree will never forgive either of us."

The ceremony took six minutes.

A city clerk with a gentle voice stood behind the pastry counter, and the chairs were stools from the prep room.

Twenty guests came.
