Chapter 16: The Youth Trip
Darlene found her voice before the gym did.
"That card is mine to use," she said into the microphone. "It's a family account. It's for the church's business."
The young deacon in the plaid shirt picked up the green ledger from the end of the pie table.
"Pastor," he said. "I think it should be read."
He was not loud, and he did not need to be.
The pastor, a stooped man in his sixties with a soft Ohio voice, took the microphone from Darlene's hand.
She let him.
I think she was surprised that anyone could.
"Deacon," the pastor said, "read what you found."
He opened the ledger on the pie table and ran a finger down a column.
"Card ending four-four-seven-one is the Youth Trip Fund debit card," he said. "Mrs. Rieder holds it as treasurer of the pie table."
"I've held it for nine years," Darlene said.
"The pharmacy charge for September twenty-ninth is on it," said the deacon. "So are fourteen cash withdrawals, one a week, May through September."
I heard Dale draw a breath beside me.
