"Yours," I said to my mother-in-law on the loading dock. "All of it, Darlene."
She stood in the doorway with the pie in her arms and her mouth working.
Then she turned and went back inside to the hymn, and the door sighed shut behind her.
Dale's hand was still at my waist.
He did not take it away, and I did not ask him to.
On the following Saturday, my mother came for the children at four o'clock.
She is seventy-six, a retired school cafeteria cook, and she arrived on my porch with two overnight bags and a look.
"I'm taking them to the bowling alley, and then to my house, and then to church in the morning," she said.
"Mom."
"I have no questions," my mother said, loudly, on the porch. "I just have a very full weekend."
My daughter ran past her with her notebook and her stuffed rabbit.
"Bye, Mom! Say hi to Coach!" she called from the car.
"I will not be saying hi to Coach," I said.
"You will," said my son, from the back seat, with his earbuds in.
My mother patted my cheek and left.
