Zion Lutheran holds its candlelight service at seven on Christmas Eve, and by a quarter to, the pews were full.
Snow had come down all afternoon, soft and steady, and the church windows glowed yellow over a white lot.
I sat in the fourth pew with a candle in a paper collar.
My daughter was on my left, writing the hymn numbers in her notebook as the board changed.
My son sat on my right in the sweater my mother had knitted him.
