Chapter 10: The Report
The gala card lay on Lise's table all week, and Julien's words about her wrist stayed in Margaux's head.
*I will not ask first.*
She did not answer the card, and she did not throw it away.
At twelve weeks, Margaux heard the heartbeat for the first time.
It filled the small room, fast and steady.
Lise clapped both hands over her mouth.
"That's it?" she whispered. "That's the whole person?"
"That's the whole person," said the obstetrician, turning the screen. "Strong. Everything's where it should be. Your lining is still thin, so you rest, you take the supplements, and you do not lift anything heavy."
Margaux could not take her eyes off the grey flicker on the screen.
She had waited three years to see it.
She had not expected to be crying with her hand pressed against her mouth, and she did not mind.
The doctor wiped her gel off and sat down at the desk.
"Now, for my notes. Why was your history so difficult? You are twenty-nine, you have no blockages and your hormones were normal before treatment. Who diagnosed the infertility?"
"No one did," Margaux said slowly. "Before my wedding, we did a premarital panel at the Marceau family clinic. My mother-in-law phoned me the results. She said my chance was under one percent."
The doctor frowned. "You didn't see the report?"
"She read me the numbers."
"May I suggest you ask for it? You are entitled to your own file."
"Now," Lise said. "She'll ask for it now."
Margaux's phone call to the clinic took four minutes.
By two o'clock the same afternoon, she was standing at its reception desk in the old town, where a nurse had her sign for a heavy envelope with the Marceau name on the corner.
