Chapter 15: The Lift

Lise opened her door at three in the morning in a bathrobe, with a toothbrush in her mouth.

She took one look at Margaux, wet to the skin on the landing, and took the bag out of her hand.

"Tell me tomorrow," she said around the toothbrush. "Tonight you drink something hot."

Margaux slept in Lise's spare bed in her clothes.

The next evening, a little after six, Lise's phone buzzed on the kitchen table.

She read it and her eyebrows went up.

"There is a very tall man in my entrance hall," she said. "He has a box. He says he'll stand there until you come down, or until the concierge calls the police."

"Tell him to go home."

"I told him. He said he'd wait."

Margaux stood at the window and looked down at the street.

The black car was parked across the road.

"Five minutes," she said. "Downstairs. Not up here."

The old lift in Lise's building was a narrow iron cage that rattled on its cables.

Julien was waiting at the bottom with a cardboard box in both arms.

He did not look as though he had slept.

"I'm not coming back," Margaux said, before he could speak.

"I have not come to ask you to."

He set the box in her hands, and it was heavy.

"That is every copy of the file," he said. "The paper, the drive, and the notes my assistant made. There are no others."

"How do I know that?"

"Because I have signed a statement on top, in front of my lawyer, that you own every page and every record." He took a breath. "And my assistant no longer works for me. He knew better than to hand a woman's medical papers to a man who hadn't asked her."

"You read them too."

"I read them twice, and I am ashamed of both times."
