Chapter 18: The Vote

Margaux walked into the boardroom at ten o'clock with her badge on her lapel and a thin folder in her hand.

Julien had offered to come.

She had told him to wait in the car.

"I'll only open the door," he had said.

"You opened it. Now let me stand in it."

Eleven board members sat around the long table.

Thibault was at the head, in a grey suit, with the dark smudges of three bad nights under his eyes.

Manon sat at his elbow in pale blue, and Hortense sat behind them both, in the chair she had no right to take.

The deputy director of research slipped in at the back and stood against the wall.

"Madame Villard," the chairman said. "You were not invited."

"I'm a director of this company. I'm told you're about to vote on removing me."

"We are," Thibault said. "Gross misconduct. You slandered the chief executive in front of four hundred guests and the press."

"I showed them a document."

"A forgery."

"Yours," Margaux said.

Somebody coughed.

The chairman opened his hands. "Let us keep this orderly. The motion is on the table. Madame Villard has five minutes."

She opened her folder and laid three sheets side by side.

"These are the patent applications for your three chronic-illness treatments," she said. "Together they are sixty per cent of this company's revenue."

Nobody moved.

"The inventor on all three is Margaux Villard. The company has used them for five years under a licence I signed on the day I came back."

She turned the last page toward them.
