Chapter 9: The Door
Thibault came to the Aubrac gate at seven on Saturday morning, and he did not come quietly.
Margaux heard the shouting from the upstairs room, where she had just finished the old woman's morning needles.
"Open it! I know she's in there!"
The old woman lifted an eyebrow. "Is that one yours?"
"Not any more," Margaux said.
She went down the stairs.
Julien was already in the hall with his jacket off and his sleeves turned back.
"Do you want him gone?" he asked.
"Let him in," Margaux said. "I'll finish it."
"I will be in the next room."
"You'll hear it all from there."
Julien nodded and stepped back.
The gate buzzed, and the guard let Thibault walk the length of the drive.
He came up the steps unshaved, in yesterday's shirt, with the look of a man who had not slept.
"Margaux."
"You're in a stranger's house," she said. "Lower your voice."
"Where else would I be? You're in someone else's house, with someone else's driver. My mother is in bed with a doctor. You have ruined her."
"I played her own voice back to her. That's all."
His hands came up.
"Margaux. Listen to me. I did all of it to protect you."
She waited.
"My mother would have destroyed you. She would have thrown you out the first week. The certificate bought you five good years."
"It bought you five good years," Margaux said. "I got three years of injections."
"I never made you do those."
"You smiled when I did them."
He changed his face, and it was the tender one she used to love.
"Come home. Please. Manon was a mistake, a stupid night, and now there is a baby and I can't undo it. But you are the one I love. I will marry you properly, in a church, in front of everyone. We'll try again. We'll find a clinic."
