Chapter 14: The Head of the Table
The Garland Harbor conference room had a table for twenty.
At 7:52, I sat down in the chair at the far end.
Someone had set a brass nameplate in front of it.
LAKESHORE CAPITAL PARTNERS.
Nick's lawyers filled the left side of the table. They did not look at me directly. They looked at the nameplate, and then at Nick, and then at their pens.
The gray-haired woman from the trust sat on my right with a folder.
My father sat against the wall in his overcoat, with his reading glasses on their cord.
The agent in the tan raincoat stood by the window, pretending to be an assistant.
Nick took the chair at the head of the table and did not look at me once.
I understood why. If he looked, the room would see everything.
At 8:04, the door opened.
Brent came in first, in the navy suit, with his lawyer a half step behind and a leather portfolio under one arm.
He was smiling at the room.
He got as far as the third chair.
Then he saw me.
I watched the smile stay on his face a second after the rest of him had stopped.
"Lee," he said.
"Don't."
"What is she doing here?" He turned to Nick. "Nick, I'm sorry. This woman has been harassing my family all week. She's unwell. Please have security remove her."
Nobody moved.
"She's sitting in the Lakeshore chair," one of Nick's lawyers said, quietly.
Brent laughed.
"Lakeshore is a bank," he said. "Some fund in New York. It holds a loan."
