Chapter 16: I Waive

Leigh's POV

Shelby walked the length of the table with the whole room watching her.

Nobody told her where to stand. She stopped across from the agent, with Brent's handcuffed hands six feet to her right.

"Shelby," Brent said. His voice was soft. "Come here. You're confused."

She did not look at him.

"Ma'am," the agent said. "You're his legal wife. The law says I can't make you testify against him. You can choose to."

"I know what the law says."

"Then I'll ask you plainly. Do you want to?"

Shelby turned her head and finally looked at the man she had married at twenty.

"I waive," she said.

It came out small and then she said it again, louder, so the back of the room could hear.

"I waive it. All of it. Write it down."

Brent's lawyer sputtered.

"She's been coerced," he said. "She's been living with the Stannards for two days."

"I've been living with a man who hit me," Shelby said, "and I have been living with a man who gave me a cup of tea and a blanket. I know which one coerced me."

She pulled her phone out of the overcoat pocket and put it in the agent's hand.

"Every text from him since June. The wire for fifty thousand. The script he wrote for me to say on Tuesday, with the line about calling her a stalker. His voice memo, where he says it." She swallowed. "I kept all of it because I was afraid he'd say I made it up."

"You made a good choice," the agent said.

"No," Shelby said. "I made it late."

I had not planned to speak.

"Shelby," I said.

She turned to me, braced.

"The apology was for me," I said. "This one wasn't. Thank you."
