Chapter 19: Terms
Nick lived on the eleventh floor of a plain brick building, three blocks from the river.
There was no doorman, and no ceiling camera, and no chandelier.
He unlocked the door himself, turned on one lamp and stood aside.
"It isn't much," he said.
I walked in and looked at the whole of it in one turn.
A couch. A kitchen table with one chair pulled out. A shelf of paperbacks with broken spines, and a framed photograph of a man in a hard hat on a loading dock.
"Your father?" I asked.
"Rockford. The year before he lost it."
"He looks like you."
"You looked just like that this morning when Brent held up that wire page," Nick said. "Perfectly calm."
I put my coat on the chair.
I did not know what to say to that, so I sat on the arm of his couch.
He crossed the room and knelt in front of me.
He took off my left shoe, set it beside the couch and took off the right.
"What are you doing?"
"Something I haven't done yet."
His hand closed around my ankle. It was warm and slow and a little rough, and he was looking at the hand, not at me.
"You've been on your feet since four a.m.," he said.
"Five."
"Since you stood in the doorway of your hotel room with a sheet of paper."
His thumb moved up the inside of my calf.
I forgot what I had been angry about.
"Nick."
"Yes."
"It's Friday."
"I know."
"It hasn't closed."
He lifted his head.
"No," he said. "It hasn't."
"You said nothing personal until Friday closes. So by your own terms, this is nothing personal."
