Chapter 7: Love You, Lee

On Thursday morning, my husband held a press conference at his own loading dock.

I watched it on my father's phone in the back of his car, with the volume down.

I had not said a word to my father since the loan papers.

"Seven years," I said. "You let me sign for it, and you never said his name."

"You were happy," he said. "I told myself it was your money to lose."

"It was never mine to lose. It was Mom's."

He took the hit and did not argue.

"Tell me the rest tonight," I said. "Right now, watch him."

A podium. A banner that said PRUDEN COLD CHAIN: KEEPING AMERICA FRESH. Eleven reporters and the redhead's crew, who had been given the front row.

Brent stood behind the podium in a dark suit.

Shelby stood at his side in a pale blue dress, holding his hand.

She looked as if she had slept badly, and she kept her eyes on the floor.

"My wife and I have been through a nightmare," Brent said.

His voice cracked in exactly the right place.

"For months, a deeply troubled woman has been stalking me. She pretended to be my wife. She broke into our home. On Tuesday, she tried to take everything my wife and I built."

Cameras flashed.

"I have asked the police to review her actions. And I'm asking you, please, to leave her alone. She needs help."

My father, beside me, made a low, angry sound.

"I'd like to take his tie," he said, "and I'd like to put it in his mouth."

"Dad."

"I'm only saying."

I opened the car door.

"Wait here."

"Absolutely not," my father said, and got out behind me.

We walked across the lot together, a woman in a gray suit and an old man in a rumpled overcoat with his glasses on a cord.

Nobody stopped us.

At the edge of the crowd stood a tall man in a charcoal suit with his arms folded.
