Chapter 8: Two Million Dollars

Brent's lawyer got him off the stage in under a minute.

He pulled Brent through a steel door behind the podium, and the reporters ran after them shouting.

I stayed where I was.

My father put his hand on my back. "You did well," he said. "Don't spoil it by chasing him."

"I'm not chasing him."

"Then who are you waiting for?"

The steel door opened again.

Shelby came out alone.

The pale blue dress had a smear of mascara down the front of it. She walked straight through the cameras without seeing a single one, and she stopped three feet in front of me.

The redhead lifted her phone.

"Don't," I said.

"Fam, this is content."

"If you film her now, she'll never say a word to you again." I did not raise my voice.

The redhead looked at Shelby.

Shelby looked at the ground.

The phone lowered.

"The ladies' room," Shelby said. "Please."

I let her lead me down a concrete hall, past a row of time clocks, to a bathroom with a tin door.

She locked it behind us.

Then she sat down on the edge of the sink and put her face in her hands.

I waited.

I did not want to be gentle with her. Two days ago, she had put her hand across my face in front of three hundred thousand strangers.

But her shoulders were shaking in a way I recognized.

"I married him when I was twenty," she said into her palms. "He was twenty-four, and he was so sure of everything. We were together nine months."

"And then?"

"And then he left. He said he'd be back in a week. He wasn't."

"You never filed for divorce."

"I couldn't afford a lawyer." She looked up. Her eyes were red. "I didn't think I had to. He sent me a letter. It said the papers were handled."
