Chapter 6: Dr. Winslow
Rocco took me to his study and shut the door.
He put the hospital ID card on the desk and his own pistol beside it.
He did not point the gun at me.
He only set it where we could both see it.
"Sit," he said.
I sat.
My legs weren't steady, and I didn't want him to see it.
"Four years ago, a surgeon named Ada Winslow cut open my father's chest," he said. "He didn't come out."
"I know."
"You know."
"I was there," I said. "I was the surgeon."
His voice stayed level, which was worse than shouting.
"You came into my house, took my pulse, ate my toast and told me you were nobody."
"I told you I wasn't going to tell you," I said. "That was the term, and you agreed to it."
"I agreed to it for a stranger."
"You agreed to it for a woman who found the poison in your honey."
He picked up the gun and put it down again.
"Why?" he said.
"Why did I come?"
"Why did you knock on the door of the man whose family destroyed you?"
I had practiced the answer in the car, and it had sounded better there.
"Because you did destroy me," I said. "Because the hospital board read a letter at my hearing with the Barsanti family's name on it, and the letter had your signature at the bottom."
He didn't deny it.
"Because I read my own name in the newspaper with the word killer beside it, in your family's mouth, for six weeks."
"My father was dead."
"I know that better than you do."
"You don't," Rocco said.
For the first time, his voice cracked at the edge.
