Chapter 23: The Eighth Day
The Burlington paper ran it on Monday, above the fold, with a photograph of Roz kissing me under a chandelier.
The foundation's auditors froze the family fund on Tuesday. By Friday the loan on Declan's partnership share had been voided, pending review.
Philippa had gone to her sister's house in Connecticut. She had not called anyone, and nobody had called her.
I wrote for nine nights.
I wrote in the study with the door shut and a pot of tea going cold.
On the tenth night, I wrote the last line and put down my pen.
I did not read it back.
On Sunday evening, I asked them both to sit at the kitchen table.
It was the same table where I had written my rules on a takeout menu.
The snow had gone soft outside the window, and the first drip fell from the eaves.
"This is the eighth day," I said. "Late. But it's the one I picked."
Declan sat very straight. Roz twisted her hands in her lap.
"Before I answer," said Declan, "I have something."
He laid a roll of drafting paper on the table and unrolled it flat.
It was a drawing of my lake house, down to the crooked chimney.
On the north side, where the barn stood, he had added a wing.
It held a long room with a window onto the dock and a bed wide enough for three.
Beside it was a small study with a good desk.
"It's yours," he said. "Everything is yours. I'll draw it, I'll build it with my own hands, and I've signed a paper with my lawyer that says I have no claim on this house. Not now, not ever."
He pushed a document across.
"If you say no, I'll still build the study. It's good for a writer."
I looked at the drawing for a long time.
"And me," said Roz.
