My Husband Chose My Best Friend Over Me, So I Took Everything Back novel · Chapter 14 of 24

Chapter 14: Three Terms

"Both," I said.

"Yes."

"Me, and her."

"You, and her, and the man who wrote her paper." Anthony kept his hands at his sides. "Clark Kovach walked into my office a week before you filed. I had waited three years for his name to come back to me."

"So you took his money."

"I took his retainer so I could sit in every room you sat in. I meant to take your seat, and your house, and make you feel the floor go. I meant to do it very well."

The wind pulled a strand of hair across my mouth.

I did not push it away.

"And now?"

"Now I am standing on a terrace trying to say that I have changed my mind, and I do not know whether I am allowed."

"You're not."

"I know."

"You don't get to decide that on your own, either." I stepped back from the wall. "Show me."

"Show you what?"

"The signature. You've held it against me for weeks. Put it in my hand."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he reached inside his jacket and took out a folded sheet, soft with handling.

It was a photocopy of the last page of the Westchester judgment.

My name was at the bottom, in my own blue ink.

I had seen it on the drive. It was worse on paper.

"I carry it," Anthony said. "I should tell you that too."

I took out my own phone and found a picture.

I had taken it in Howard's records room three days earlier, after I opened the drive and could not sleep.

It showed the cover sheet of the original file, as it had come to my desk, with a yellow sticky note still attached.

I held the screen up to him.

The note was in round, cheerful handwriting.

*M, just p.14! Flight at 6. Coffee's on your desk. xo B*

Anthony read it twice.

"She brought you the paper," he said.
