Chapter 20: Seven O'Clock

Meredith's POV

I played the closet video at three in the morning, in Anthony's kitchen, with the sound turned low.

I had not done it before.

I had told myself I did not need to, and the truth was I could not stand to hear myself.

The recording started forty minutes before I came home.

Bree's face filled the screen, close and bright, whispering to her own phone as she settled into the dark among my coats.

She narrated.

She always had.

I listened to the whole file twice, and then I called Howard.

At seven the conference room held twelve partners, one screen, and a long table of cold coffee.

Howard sat at the head with his glasses on their cord.

Anthony stood against the back wall, as he had promised, with his hands where everyone could see them.

Clark sat at the far end alone.

Bree came in at seven exactly in cream wool, with a folder under her arm and a smile.

Howard had let her in as a guest of the firm.

He had said it would cost him nothing.

"Good morning," she said. "I'm so sorry to interrupt a family matter. But I think this is the kindest way."

She walked the length of the table and put a stapled set in front of every partner.

"Meredith has withdrawn her candidacy. Here is her signed letter, and her signed power of attorney naming me to carry out her wishes. She's unwell. She's been unwell for some time. I only want to protect her."

The partners looked at the papers, and then at me.

Nobody spoke.

I stood.

"May I address the partners, Howard?"

"You may."
